All towns, cities, communities and rural districts/regions worldwide are able to participate.
Rural districts/regions are able to choose whether they wish to participate together or for the individual towns/communities to be listed separately (as indicated by the supplement “X in the rural district of YZ” next to the municipality’s name). The kilometres collected will then be credited to both the town/communityand the rural district/region. The only condition for this is that the CITY CYCLING campaign must take place in the rural district/region and associated town/community at the same time!
Definition of a ‘region’: A municipal parliament elected by the citizens as well as the status as a politically-independent community are decisive for a region to also be considered in the “Most active municipal parliament” category, e.g. the region of Hanover (and therefore all those able to be ordinary members of Climate Alliance). The same applies for municipal associations and similar alliances.
In principle, any municipality (town/city, community, rural district/region) worldwide is able to participate – so also municipalities that are not a member of Climate Alliance. While a local council resolution or suchlike is not necessary for participation/registration, approval must be obtained from the municipality, e.g. the (lord) mayor, local authorities, etc.
The municipality – or, as appropriate, the municipal representative – is responsible for preparation and realisation of the local CITY CYCLING campaign and must name (at least) one contact person, among others to serve as the local contact for Climate Alliance, participants.

Municipalities will first need to register officially with Climate Alliance (see the Registration tab for details). As soon as a subpage has been set up and added to the list of participating municipalities, teams are able to sign up for the online cycling log and to collect climate-friendly kilometres for the municipality during the campaign period.
On 21 consecutive days between 1 May and 30 September. The participating municipalities are free to choose the exact campaign period.

Climate Alliance accepts registrations throughout the ongoing CITY CYCLING season. Provided the campaign can run for the required 21 consecutive days, registrations are also accepted in September.

When a municipality registers for the campaign, details of the exact number of members in the local parliament will be requested. This information is decisive for the prize category of “Most active municipal parliament” in which Climate Alliance acknowledges municipalities’ achievements.
In principle, members of the local parliament are all persons belonging to the town/city/municipal/district council or committee. A right to vote is always decisive here.
For towns/cities, there is also the option of adding members of district parliaments/local councillors, etc. and actively including them in the local CITY CYCLING campaign.
Yes! We are delighted to report that the CITY CYCLING campaign has become so well established that Climate Alliance will continue to run the campaign indefinitely.
Towns/city, communities and rural districts/regions are able to make the CITY CYCLING campaign a permanent fixture in their planning for the coming year; the campaign period from 1 May to 30 September will remain unchanged. The local campaign period of 21 CITY CYCLING days in the municipalities will also stay the same.
As in every year, registrations will be accepted from spring.
